The best definition of what it is to be human comes from Christianity: each person is made in the likeness of God. Conversations about what it means to be beautiful, questions about racism, gender and sexuality, social media and influence, or about what makes someone “good” need to be based on identity — a real identity in Christ, not social expectation.
Should we want America to turn to God? Of course! Our hearts’ desire should be to see the people of America turn to the Lord in repentance and become the people of God. But nowhere in the Bible was this purpose accomplished through political power. It takes the power of the Spirit through the proclamation of the gospel.
In Ephesians 5:23, we learn that the marriage of a husband and wife reflects the relationship between Christ and the Church. Earthly marriage is a parable, pointing to this greater relationship, and in this way, sex is symbolic of the relational intimacy between Christ and His Bride.
My understanding is that critical race theory is the view that the law and legal institutions are inherently racist, and race itself, instead of being biologically grounded and natural, is a socially constructed concept used by white people to further their economic and political interests at the expense of people of color.
“Every church leader who has emailed or texted me has asked that we would pray for the Lord to strengthen them in their faith — that they would ‘stay strong in the Lord, who is the Sovereign King,’ as one put it,” Manley wrote.
If you’re a Christian, God is at work to change you from the inside out, but you are not a passive participant in the process. It will take effort, time and energy on your part, and … the journey won’t be easy.
I remain hopeful for not only the SBC but the greater Church across the United States. We must hold fast to our convictions and to scripture as the inspired and inerrant Word of God, and foster a love of proper doctrine, while also fostering a love for each other, outdoing one another in honor.
