Luke 1:17-24
After Gabriel appears to Zechariah in the temple to tell him about John, Zechariah asks him, “How can I be sure of this?” My first thought, “Hey, an angel is speaking to you. And you are a priest!” But in reality, we would all be shocked and spout off whatever came to mind.
Gabriel is not pleased with Zechariah’s response. After reminding Zechariah that he has been sent to give this good news to Zechariah, Gabriel announces that Zechariah will not speak until the day of John’s birth. Zechariah and Elizabeth were old. Imagine the joy they feel and how exciting it would be to tell family and friends about the pregnancy and how God has been faithful.
And now Zechariah will be silent until the baby arrives. When Zechariah comes out of the temple, there are many people who have been waiting for him to come out. He gestures to let them know that he can’t speak – he is unable to share some of the best news of his life because of his unbelief.
Zechariah returns home and Elizabeth conceives. She remains hidden for five months. Luke doesn’t tell us why she remains hidden but knowing that she is older and pregnant we might have some idea. Imagine life in a house where one person can’t speak and the other is hiding away while pregnant. Imagine the joy and praise Elizabeth shares when she finally goes out in public and shares the news of her pregnancy. Imagine the joy and surprise of her friends and family. They will rejoice with her that her barrenness has been taken away. And imagine the surprise and joy of the people when the baby is born and his father is able to speak once again.
How can you share the surprise and joy of this story with others?
