NOTE: This post continues a series of writings through the book of Luke. See the previous post here.
It is interesting that Mary’s beautiful response in these verses wasn’t something that occurred after the angel of the Lord came to her earlier in this chapter. Instead, she sings this song of praise after her relative, Elizabeth, rejoices and affirms what God had promised to Mary. We don’t know what was in Mary’s heart after her encounter with the angel or before her visit with Elizabeth as she considered the extraordinary role she was given, but here we get to listen in on her humble and worshipful response.
Mary marvels at the character of God, completely in awe that He would find favor in her and use such a humble servant to accomplish His glorious purposes. As opposed to being burdened by such a task, she is jubilant. Her God is mighty, merciful, and great!
Through Elizabeth’s greeting, God graciously reminds Mary that what He said is true and all will be accomplished and Mary can’t help but sing His praises. I would like to remind you of the same truths, dear reader– God’s word is true and He will fulfill His promises. He is faithful. He is with us. May we marvel like Mary and go forth in triumphant praise!
