Walking through Luke: Devotion

Mary isn’t questioning from a place of doubt but from wonder – not “if” but “how.”

NOTE: This post continues a series of writings through the book of Luke. See the previous post here.

Unmarried, teenage Mary has just heard that she will conceive and bear the Son of the Most High, and her honest and understandable reaction is, “how will this be, since I am a virgin?”

Mary isn’t questioning from a place of doubt but from wonder – not “if” but “how.”

The angel further reveals how God works and who he is in his trinitarian nature. He continues by telling her that the miraculous has already begun with her barren relative, Elizabeth, having conceived a son, as well.

And what is Mary’s response to all of this?

To the prophecy that she, a virgin, will bring forth a son that will save the world.

To Yahweh’s mystical and transcendent nature.

To the news that her relative, who has yearned and wept for a child as long as Mary has known her, is pregnant.

To a God who has looked upon her with favor.

She responds with, “Behold, I am a servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”

Powerful faith and pure devotion.

Is it easy for you to believe that nothing will be impossible with God?

What is holding you back from having devotion like Mary?

Pray to the Lord to increase your faith today.
