Walking through Luke: Joy

Before Mary could tell her relative of what happened, Elizabeth’s son in her womb leaped out of joy.

NOTE: This post continues a series of writings through the book of Luke. See the previous post here.

Mary “went with haste” to see Elizabeth after the encounter with the angel. But before Mary could tell her relative of what happened, Elizabeth’s son in her womb leaped out of joy.

Without any additional information, Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, knew Mary was with child, and called her “blessed.”

In this short passage we learn two powerful lessons:

Proximity to the Lord produces joy, and the Holy Spirit is the revealer of Truth.

We also see the power of community. While Mary accepted the words of the angel Gabriel and understood the weight of them, she must’ve had doubts and fears about her ability to carry the responsibility set before her. Hearing the words of the Spirit from Elizabeth, someone she trusted and loved, must’ve been a much needed bolstering to Mary’s young heart.

Praise the Lord for his kindness in how he communicates with us. Have you surrounded yourself with people who affirm God’s work in you?
